Storyline:
Not quite. Bell Bottom isn’t directly based on true events but it is, however, inspired by the true events of the 1984 Indian Airlines Airbus A300 hijacking. A disclaimer in the trailer states “Although the film is inspired by a true event, it is not the replication of actual happenings”.
The true event that inspired the movie took place on 24th August 1984 on an Indian Airline ‘flight 421’. A hundred passengers were aboard that was going from Chandigarh to Srinagar when seven hijackers demanded to be flown to the U.S. It is thought to be related to a secessionist struggle in the Indian state of Punjab.
A 36-hour standoff ensued between the highjackers and Indian officials came to an anticlimactic end after their demands weren’t met at they gave in to capture once the plane had landed. Thankfully, all passengers survived the ordeal.
The movie is expected to loosely follow the events of the hijacking but not be directly based on it, as Kumar says it is an “original screenplay”. In the film trailer, he is shown to be a one-man army who will single-handedly take control of the situation and attempt to rescue the passengers.
